I figured a short tribute on my website would be fitting, because she was such a great influence on my life and my work. She was my best friend.
Ioana and I cared about her deeply, and she was involved in so many aspects of our life together. She’d wake us up every morning by rattling her cage, signaling that she wanted to come out and play. That’s how we'd start each and every day. Then, I’d retire to my office to write and she’d be with me all the time, hopping around, tugging at my pants every so often to let me know it’s petting/grooming time. Then I would drop everything and answer her call. Every time.
She has enriched our lives in more ways than I could ever recount. Her presence by my side as I wrote every day for the past three years has made a solitary profession a lot less lonely. It will be hard to go on without her, as our house now seems empty and soulless. But she had a good life and she made ours so much better. She is a big part of our story, the most beautiful part, and she always will be. Her wonderful soul inspired me in so many ways. It also inspired this quote by my character Isabel Mensah, which I would now like to dedicate to her:
When another being offers you its entire trust, whether it is an animal, a child or an adult, the care with which you handle that trust and the way in which you repay it, define your value as a human being.
I would like to believe that my life, in great part, will always be defined by the love I have for her!
Goodbye, my sweet, cherished friend!
